ConundrumsFeel free to post answers to any of these questions if you feel you can enlighten me.
Why do I always think I need to buy more stationery when stationery may actually make up the bulk of my possessions?
Why have we been set on a boy’s name for the last few months and yet have absolutely no progress on deciding a girl’s name? Or even narrowing it down? How do people ever name girls???

-> Why do I always think I need to buy more stationery when stationery may actually make up the bulk of my possessions?
:Consumer empowerment - by buying this thing - I will go and achieve this other thing.
->Why have we been set on a boy’s name for the last few months and yet have absolutely no progress on deciding a girl’s name? Or even narrowing it down? How do people ever name girls???
:Because the process of choosing a name involves eliminating all of the people you didn't like with this name you'd consider - and perhaps in your case - for every girl name you think of - you can think of a past experience with that name.
-> Should I watch a DVD or do my marking?
: Do your marking - then reward yourself with the DVD.
-> Why does painting the house take so long?
: Some might blame things like estimatation and project management - but it ultimately comes back to your perceived resources (time). People think (particularly in non-work-related things) that they have more time than they actually do.
-> What is it about hot chocolate that makes everything alright?
: I'll leave this one as an exercise for the reader.
->How come our internet connection is speedy one minute and non-existent the next?
: I remember you had a rant in 1997 about 'getting an email from the little man in the internet' - and I ranted back about the thousands of man years that had gone into this engineering marvel - this modern wonder of the world. Short answer is - plumbing issue - depends how many people are sharing your pipe and which tap you're plugging into at the other end.
->What does a text-book extrovert do when she finishes work in preparation to be at home full-time for at least six months with a non-conversationalist?
: 1. List all the people you will now kick off large philophical email discussions with. 2. Spend time theoretically and practically learning of the biological wonder of the human digestive system in all its glory.
-> Why hasn’t someone invented a thing that will hold my heat-pack precisely on top of the wayward muscle?
: Because the engineers who were asked to look at the problem decided it could be solved with electrical tape - and moved on.
-> What does it say about me if I am 29 years old and still can’t watch movies that are rated MA?
: That you're a normal human being.
-> How come some of my friends can hold so much nerdy information in their heads and my head seems fairly frequently to empty itself of anything but the absolute necessities?
: 'Pregnant brain' is fairly well documented - but ultimately you shouldn't let your friends intimidate you. If it gets out of control - then carry a stack of post-it notes and a pen.
->Will I live to regret yesterday’s decision to chuck all of my uni notes and readers in the recycling?
: Maybe - then you will remember that you're living in the now - and that Uni was more about the skills that it gave you - the metaknowledge. If you really want that stuff from uni - you can just pick up a book again.
-> Isn’t it funny how friendships are kind of like the stock market? Sometimes you make big investments for very small returns, sometimes the smallest investment is met with great rewards…
: Maybe. Maybe we can be thankful to God for each day of life - and every friend he chooses to give us.
-> What songs would you add to a playlist you were preparing to play while in labour?
: Perhaps you should ask Nicole Kidman ;)
-> Why is getting stuff in the post so much fun?
: It's all about expectation and hope. Generally the expecation that something in life will be better is more fun than when it actually gets there.
And to answer the questions that the above (and very diligent reader) didn't:
When will Sting come to Sydney on tour again?
-I don't know; but perhaps in "Sting" the musical?
Why is James McEvoy lauded for his roles in Atonement, The Last King of Scotland and Becoming Jane, but not his role as Mr Tumnus?
-Could have something to do with his "manly" appeal with the whole naughty, macho typewriter thing in Atonement and the wishy-washy indecisive love interest in Becoming... but I thought he was brilliant and lovable as Mr Tumnus... and funnily enough; a lot more handsome.
What songs would you add to a playlist you were preparing to play while in labour?
-Bit of Bruce Cockburn; anything from "In the falling in Dark"; or this very cool french pianist who plays with a friend on the oud + the accordian; or just employ the partner to play hilarious ballads about birthing and life in general on the guitar?
Does anyone, other than myself and a few other frequenters of Punchbowl IGA, appreciate that Black and Gold Tropical Muesli is the greatest breakfast cereal ever made?
-While I must concede that the Black and Gold tropical museli is great; the home-made stuff with lots of seeds and honey, and some fresh greated apple (plain bacterial yoghurt too) has to come pretty darn close.
Why are all the Indigo Girls songs by Emily almost always great and all the songs by Amy almost always unlistenable?
-I have to disagree. As an indigo girls fan (rites of passage being my favoruite) I enjoy the difference between their styles and song-writing and though favour Emily; at times I really do find Amy's raw and often piercing musings just as moving.
Can I just say that your blog makes me smile so much!
